Yes, the Rangers have done this before, rejoiced too soon. The home team won two openers already this postseason and then lost two Game 2s, to Ottawa and Washington. But there was something different about this victory. It felt more definitive and demoralizing, like rope-a-dope, as if the Rangers had taken the Devils’ best punch in the second period and laughed in their faces.
